"Pinwheels for Prevention" Garden Dedication to commemorate Child Abuse Prevention Month April 2011
Friday, March 11, 2011
Commemorating National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the GFWC Dominion Woman’s Club (DWC) will be dedicating a Pinwheels for Prevention Garden at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on April 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. DWC, a member of General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Virginia, is partnering with Prevent Child Abuse Virginia and its statewide network of affiliates to prevent child abuse and neglect. DWC also supports CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for children) of Greater Prince William, which provides services to the more than 500 children and youth each year, providing specially trained volunteers from the community to help protect some of our most vulnerable citizens. Dominion Woman’s Club is one of many organizations across the state joining with the Prevent Child Abuse Virginia to raise awareness about the need to better serve children and families. The pinwheel is the national symbol of child abuse prevention and pinwheel gardens are being planted all across the state as an emblem of healthy and happy childhoods. According to GFWC Dominion Woman’s Club President, Stephanie Sturges, “It is critical for our community to keep an open dialogue with these sensitive issues. It affects all our neighborhoods, and there are no economic boundaries to abuse. Organizations like Prevent Child Abuse Virginia focus on primary prevention for at risk families through important programs such as Healthy Families. CASA’s mission is to provide a voice in court for every abused and neglected child so that they might have an opportunity for a safe and permanent home, and provides special advocates to those who have been abused, neglected and abandoned.” Last year in Virginia, 6,234 children were found to be victims in founded cases of abuse and neglect. Communities across the Commonwealth must continue to join forces to battle this public health issue. Dominion Woman’s Club invites local residents to support National Child Abuse Prevention Month by attending the dedication and planting a pinwheel, visit Prevent Child Abuse Virginia at www.PCAV.org, attend a local fundraising event, or contact the Dominion Woman’s Club for more information at www.dominionwomansclub.org.
Dominion Woman's Club SCRAMBLE a success!
Thursday, July 22, 2010
On July 12th, Dominion Woman’s Club hosted its annual “Scramble for Shelter” golf tournament at Dominion Valley Country Club’s magnificent Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course. For the 3rd year in a row the weather cooperated, to the delight of the 87 golfers who assembled for 18 holes of FUNdraising. The event was generously supported by major sponsors; FM Global, Kelmar Inc, Thomas Bigoski Insurance Agency LLC , BB&T Bank, Cathy’s Home Team, Advantage Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation LLC?, Tony's New York Pizza, Renewal MedSpa, Fauquier Bank?, Best Buy, McLaughlin Family, Williams Family, Rudy Family and Petrella Family. Over 50 other businesses, groups and individuals also stepped up as cart sponsors, raffle and silent auction sponsors, donating thousands of dollars worth of products and services, making the event a truly exceptional experience for all in attendance. During the awards ceremony, prizes were awarded for the top men’s, women’s and mixed teams, along with longest drive and closest to the pin for men and women and a putting contest winner. And of course the big winner of the day was the charities supported by the Dominion Woman’s Club. Nearly $14, 000.00 was raised during this event, all of which will go towards continuing and expanding numerous projects and programs provided by the club in support of their mission to improve the community by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. According to Dominion Woman’s Club Founder and “Scramble for Shelter’ Chairperson, Nanette McKeel Petrella, “The funds raised during this event, while substantial and critical to our work, are only part of the benefit to the community. They provide the seed money for much of our work, which is then enhanced by the generous in-kind donations we receive from our own membership and supporters, and is further amplified by the volunteer service hours provided by our club women. The beneficial impact to the members of our community is immense and long lasting. It truly has the potential to change lives for the better and for that we are extremely grateful.” GFWC Dominion Woman's Club is a club intended for women, over the age of 18, interested in serving the needs of and enhancing the communities of Prince William County and Fauquier County of Virginia. GFWC Dominion Woman’s Club is a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization, a member of the Prince William County/Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce and the proud recipient of the 2008-2009 Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award- Arts and Education. Dominion Woman's Club campaigns for Unicef's World Water Week!
Saturday, January 30, 2010
The Dominion Woman's Club is campaigning for local restaurants and their patrons to DINE + DONATE + DO YOUR PART for World Water Week sponsored by the UNICEF TAP Project. World Water Week is March 21st - 27th and is designed to raise awareness of the world water crisis and provide safe, clean water to the world's children. WHY A CAMPAIGN ABOUT CLEAN WATER? Because clean water is essential, yet nearly 900 million people worldwide lack access to it and nearly half of those are children. With the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti, the world is more aware than ever of the need for clean water. Increasing the number of people with safe access to clean water and basic sanitation will save children at risk of waterborne illnesses, which is the second highest cause of preventable childhood deaths. Attention: restaurants, corporate partners, volunteers, advertising agencies, community groups ! Join this lifesaving movement by simply asking people to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free. With just ONE DOLLAR, UNICEF can provide a child with 40 days worth of clean water. The UNICEF Tap Project campaign is structured to collect donations from patrons, then have restaurants submit the donations to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. This year, during World Water Week March 21st - 27th, diners will also have the option to "Text for Tap," which lets them donate quickly and easily from their table from their own mobile phone. By texting "TAP" to UNICEF (864233), patrons can make a one-time $5 donation, which will help UNICEF provide 200 children with access to clean drinking water for one day. Raising just $25.71 each night of World Water Week, or $250 total, will raise enough funds to provide 27 children with water for a whole year!

DOMINION WOMAN's CLUB SUPPORTS "SOLES 4 SOULS"
Monday, November 09, 2009
DOMINION WOMAN’S CLUB SUPPORTED SOLES4SOULS WITH OCTOBER SHOE DRIVE The Conservation Committee of the Dominion Woman's Club (DWC) passionately supported Soles4Souls through a recent club shoe drive. Soles4Soles is a charity that is “changing the world – one pair of shoes at a time” through its simple mission: To impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes. Soles4Souls originally coordinated relief efforts for the Asian Tsunami and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, netting over 1 Million pairs donated for these disasters with several churches partnering in the collection and distribution of footwear. It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unworn shoes lying in their closets. And it is estimated there are 300 million children worldwide that are without shoes. DWC members rounded up and packed over 690 pairs of new and gently used shoes, in various sizes and styles, and even some shoes without mates, knowing that any shoes that cannot be used will be repurposed or recycled at the warehouse. Friends of DWC members also generously contributed, including Buckland Mills Elementary School and Advantage Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, LLC in Gainesville, who sponsored a portion of shipping costs. The Conservation committee sorted, matched pairs, and bound them with rubber bands before filling 33 boxes for shipment. If you would like to learn more about the Soles4Souls charity, visit their website at www.soles4soles.org. If you would like to donate money towards the shipping expense, please contact the Dominion Woman’s Club at 703-732-8539 or visit our website at www.dominionwomansclub.org.
DWC seeks Volunteers for BAG A BOOK at Westgate Elementary
Wednesday, November 04, 2009
This is the second year Dominion Woman's Club Education Committee is assisting students with literacy skills at West Gate Elementary School with their "Bag a Book" program. Beginning in January 2010, the Club will be working with third graders, approximately75% of them, currently reading below grade level. The third grade teachers at West Gate are very excited about the return of the "Bag a Book" program. The teachers said the program renewed their students’ interest in reading and writing. The Dominion Woman's Club is seeking volunteers from the Club as well as local Chamber members who are willing to spend an hour of their time with the children. You can give as much as an hour a week, or just an hour a month. We will be working with the children from 2:00 to 3:00 on either Thursdays or Fridays. Volunteers may also sign up as an alternate. Everyone who works with the children will be trained first so you’ll know what to do with the children. (Basically, you’ll be leading group of third graders in a book discussion group, listening them share their journals—rewarding them with stickers—and encouraging the children to keep reading and writing!) You do not have to have read the books in advance in order to lead the discussions. The children will tell you all about the books. The school is located at 8031 Urbanna Rd. in Manassas. When you arrive, you’ll give the office your driver’s license. The office will scan it into their system, do a background check, and issue you a volunteer sticker to wear while in the building. You’ll stop in the office to retrieve your license on your way out. You do not need an updated TB test to volunteer. If you’d like to give whatever time you can to volunteer to help make this program a success for the children, please contact Beth Mears at mearsba@pwcs.edu.

DOMINION WOMANS CLUB SUPPORTS US ARMY CAISSON PLATOON EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY
Tuesday, October 06, 2009
The Public Affairs Committee of the Dominion Woman's Club (DWC) was privileged to visit the Caisson Platoon at Fort Myers, Virginia on September 24, 2009. Since its inception in 2007, the DWC has proudly supported the work at Fisher House in Washington, DC through monthly donations. Now it has expanded their support to include the equine therapy program through the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and VA Hospital. The Caisson Platoon horses used in funeral services at nearby Arlington Cemetery are now assisting Mary Jo Beckman, a master-certified therapeutic riding instructor and co-founder of the program. Every Thursday, soldiers ride without saddles, assisted by caisson platoon soldiers who act as side and lead walkers. In hippotherapy, amputees can “feel” the horse’s movement and it allows their hip girdle and ab muscles to mimic that motion. This facilitates their recovery for mobility and balance. Equine therapy also helps soldiers with traumatic brain injury work on their memory, follow directions, socialize, and stay focused. The soldiers say riding gives them a feeling of peace and freedom they can't get anywhere else. And “soldiers helping soldiers” creates a social network to keep vets from being isolated and depressed – per Larry Pence, U.S. Army Retired, program co-founder. Kathy Suggitt, DWC member, commented “it was so heartwarming to see their smiles as they became like everyone else – just another equestrian – no wheelchairs, no canes, just people riding horses!” If you would like to see the Caisson Platoon, they will be doing a 10-minute exhibition at the Washington International Horse Show, at 6:50 pm, Saturday, October 24, Verizon Center, Washington, DC. This should be an exciting time because the Caisson Platoon will lead the adaptive carriage followed by two riders with disabilities. For further information on the Caisson Platoon, please contact co-founders Larry D. Pence at lppence@wildblue.net, 540-286-0981, or Mary Jo Beckman at mjbeckman@gmail.com, 703-625-0770, or contact the Dominion Woman’s Club at 703-732-8539 or visit our website at www.dominionwomansclub.org.

BIRTHDAY FAIRY VISITS B.A.R.N.
Saturday, September 19, 2009
PRESS RELEASE Contact: Stephanie Sturges Dominion Woman’s Cub 703-732-8539 DOMINION WOMAN’S CLUB STARTS BIRTHDAY FAIRY PROGRAM FOR LOCAL WOMEN AND CHILDREN The Home Life Committee of the Dominion Woman's Club (DWC) is proud to announce a new program designed to provide a little pick me up for families striving to get back on their feet. The Birthday Fairy Program provides struggling mothers an opportunity to celebrate their children’s birthday with a little less stress. The DWC clubwomen provide brand new wrapped gifts ($25 - $35 dollar value) for the children who are celebrating birthdays each month. An important detail of this program was to include the mothers in the birthday program; they receive the same support for their birthdays. We recognize that families struggling may not have the ready resources to celebrate their special day; we gladly help the residents of the Transitional Housing BARN program, know that someone is thinking of them. BARN is a not-for-profit organization that provides housing, supportive services, life management skills and financial education for homeless women and their dependent children. The response from Dominion Woman's Club members and local community has been so great, providing the needed 30 fairies for the residents at BARN, this program is being expanded. If you would like to participate in the Birthday Fairy Program or for more information... please contact the Dominion Woman’s Club at 703-732-8539 or visit our website at www.dominionwomansclub.org. The Dominion Woman’s Club (DWC) provided gifts to women and their children staying at the ACTS (Action in Community Through Service) Turning Points Safe House in Greater Manassas. Wishlists were filled out by the women for themselves and their children. The 50+members of the DWC went into action. “I knew this was going to be an interesting project due to the turnaround of women staying at the shelter, but I was amazed at the excitement and participation of the women in the club. All I had to do was send an email indicating the shelter’s needs, and the DWC went into action.” said Project Chairman Stephanie Sturges. These and other families in similar situations deserve a happy holiday. In the end, seven children received their wishes (including a new winter coat), and the women all received four personal items. The safe house received two vacuum cleaners, diapers, wipes, new sheets, and towels which were delivered with a smile. Amber Windsor “It was a wonderful gesture on the part of the DWC to find an organization that could benefit from their volunteer work. This shelter and the people in the shelter have benefited. Domestic Violence is real and happening and it is relevant. Because of our confidentiality we don’t have as loud of a voice as the homeless shelters. The clients were very grateful especially those moving on. During the holidays many of the women didn’t even hook up with family outside of the shelter, and ended up staying at the shelter enjoying Christmas.” The ACTS safe house opened in May 2004. The house can accommodate up to 20 women and children. According to Shelter Coordinator, Amber Windsor, the average stay is about one month depending on the individuals goals and the progress they make. For more information of the services ACTS provides please visit http://www.actspwc.org/. The Dominion Woman’s Club, a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), mission is “Unity in Diversity”. We are a diverse group of women seeking to bring unique perspectives and interests in hopes of reaching out into the community.
